Body Power, ovvero la “potenza del corpo”, ma anche il “corpo in potenza”. Già, perché le fotografie di Howard Schatz – che il Gruppo Repower porta per la prima volta in mostra in Italia (Triennale di Milano, dal 28 maggio al 7 giugno 2015; allestimento di Peter Bottazzi; Biba Giacchetti curatrice) – non rivelano unicamente la forza del corpo umano fissandone nello scatto i movimenti, le torsioni e le tensioni, ma esprimono le molteplici potenzialità del fisico nel loro farsi, durante il loro svolgersi. Il fotografo americano – proveniente dalla professione medica e da una lunga carriera accademica specializzata nello studio della retina – riesce a conseguire, nelle sue immagini, la resa delle tensioni degli arti e la trazione delle membra fino al punto di farci percepire con incredibile chiarezza le vibrazioni che dal corpo in movimento scaturiscono.
Che sia il passo di danza di un ballerino o di una danzatrice, che sia lo sforzo agonistico di un atleta o di un pugile, che sia il moto impulsivo e non pensato di una figura al parco o quello calcolato di una posa in studio, le fotografie di Howard Schatz – tratte dai suoi progetti monografici più importanti come Dance, A the fight, Boxing, Athlete e Human Body – esprimono non semplicemente la bellezza delle forme nella loro armoniosa distribuzione, ma anche e soprattutto la loro mutazione e la loro alterazione in virtù di una sollecitazione che li costringe allo sforzo: sono corpi di una bellezza non statica, bensì dinamica.
Una dinamicità che è sottolineata non solamente dall’azione dei soggetti che, tuttavia, contribuisce a fondere le figure con lo spazio in cui esse interagiscono coinvolgendolo, ma specialmente grazie al ricorso di sfocature, distorsioni espositive e riflessi che dilatano l’azione facendoci percepire tutta l’energia in movimento.

Body Power, or rather “the power of the body”, but also “a body in power”. Howard Schatz’s photos –which the Repower Group brings to Italy for the first time at the Tiennale of Milan, from the 28th of May till the 7th of June 2015; staging by Peter Bottazzi; curator Biba Giacchetti) –do not only reveal the power of the human body with photos taken whilst in movement, twisting and tense, but they express the numerous potentialities of the body in their making and unfolding. The American photographer –who comes from the medical profession and a long academic career specialized in the study of the retina- manages to achieve, through his pictures, the tension of the arteries and the traction of the membra up to the point of allowing us to perceive with incredibly clarity the vibrations that the body in movement creates.
Whether it be a ballerina or a dancer’s step, whether it be an athlete or boxer’s competitive exertion, whether it be an impulsive surge, and not simply a person in a park or a calculated pose in a studio, Howard Schatz’s photographs- taken from his more important monographic projects like Dance, A the fight, Boxing, Athlete e Human Body – express not only the beauty in their harmonious shapes, but also and more importantly their mutation and their alteration in virtue of a reminder of that which forces them to the exertion: they are not bodies of static beauty but dynamic.
A dynamism that is underlined not only from the action of the subjects which, however, contribute to merging the figure within the space in which it interacts, but it is also thanks to the use of blurs, expositive distortions and reflections that dilate the action making it seem that all the energy is in movement.
