L’anfiteatro catanese si trova oggi in piazza Stesicoro nel pieno centro storico della città.Ciò che oggi rimane dell’ingresso è il portale costituito da due colonne in marmo sormontate da due capitelli in stile ionico. Ricordiamo che l’anfiteatro era tra i più grandi esistenti in Italia, appunto per testimoniare l’importanza della città catanese nel resto dell’impero. Aveva una capienza di circa 15.000 persone ed una circonferenza di 309 metri.
The catanese amphitheatre is to be found in Piazza Stesicoro, in the very heart of the city, What remains of its entrance is the portal built by two marble columns surmounted by two iconic arches. We must be reminded that the amphitheatre was one of the greatest in all of Italy, a symbol of the importance of Catania in the rest of the empire. It held upto 15.000 people and had a circumference of 309 metres.
